A Decade of Service and Cooperation in Life Science

A Decade of Service and Cooperation in Life Science

A few days ago H.M. Pharma Consultancy passed its tenth anniversary. We are not much given to retrospection, but that did give us reason for a little celebration. Not every small business survives ten years in this competitive environment.

In his 2004 landmark book The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowiecki points to Hollywood gangster films as a place to look for different ways of coordinating a business. The first way, which he exemplifies by The Godfather, Part II is a strictly top-down hierarchy resembling a highly diversified globalized corporation. The second type, exemplified by Heat, stands for the small, stable, tight-knit and highly professional gang – it stands for the small and highly flexible business where there is complete mutual trust and awareness of each member’s abilities and weaknesses. The third model is the ad hoc group of highly specialized criminal individuals that is assembled for an exactly defined job and then essentially disperses, very much in the way an independent film is produced. In my opinion Ocean’s Eleven (or one of its several sequels) would serve as the best illustration for this concept.

You might have already guessed that H.M. Pharma Consultancy is a typical example of the “Heat”-type business. However, the business environment where we perform best is of the “Ocean”-type where we can act as one while interacting with many other specialists. This is how we have developed since the year 2000, and this is how we intend to proceed into our second decade – with a twist, though: we intend to put more focus on coordinating business of our own. In any case, we look forward to more exciting years!
